What is low functioning autism?

My understanding is that it's a somewhat derogatory way of saying that an autistic person has difficulty passing as a non-autistic person, especially socially. (Or for argument sake could mean someone who simply chooses not to attempt to pass, socially).
I'm HFA (high functioning autism - again I don't like the term, not that I have an alternative to suggest). I'm termed thus because with minimal to moderate effort I can pass - socially - as someone who is simply very shy.
However despite this, my autism does interferes greatly with my employability due to the severe learning disorder-like characteristics my specific case of autism involves.
Other anon - can we not use "autistic" as an insult please?
