I suppose a lot of factors are involved.
I'd definitely want a single-pour concrete slab on which my shipping container would sit. If I planned to have a paved outside area like a patio, I'd probably make it part of the basic concrete footprint--if the land allowed it.
But most land rolls or slopes a little, and the larger a flat concrete surface is poured, the more prone it is to cracking, even if it's been well compacted over a sand, then gravel footing. For that reason, I'd certainly consider the concrete pad just for the container, and making a patio, garden containers, steps, driveway, parking area, walkway, and whatever else I want be separate entities. I might not even get them done right away (well, maybe the steps if needed), since the only way you know how your land drains under all weather conditions is living there.
