Why would an IRS return address state "Submission Processing"?

I'm away from home. The friend house-sitting for me says there's mail from the Internal Revenue Service and above the Kansas City the return address says "Submission Processing". What could this be? In January? Answers appreciated. Thank you

Were you a victim of identity theft in the past?

It could be a letter giving you your Identity Theft PIN so you can file this year.

Thank you. Yes, I was a victim of ID theft. Thanks again.

They may have found an error in your last year's income tax 1040. Perhaps you made an error, they made an error, or they need more information.

The IRS can challenge or correct things as much as seven (7) years after you file.

Something is missing from your return and that section of the IRS Service center wants it.

From last year's filing perhaps? Nothing's filed yet this year.
