Is it possible to lose a great deal of weight WITHOUT exercising?

    Yes. Weight loss or gain is about diet. If you eat fewer calories than your body needs, you will eventually use stored energy reserves (fat) to fulfill the need. If you eat more calories than you need, your body will store that extra fuel as fat. The value of exercise is broad. When it comes to weight loss, exercise burns more calories than sitting on the couch. Therefore, the person can eat more and still lose weight. That noted, most people do not exercise intensely enough to burn more than about 300 calories.

    Depends on your definition of "great deal," but if you're too lazy to exercise then don't expect to lose weight at a normal rate- you'll lose it very slowly.

    Exercise is essential for your health - whether you need to lose weight or not.

    Yeah, but it takes longer, and there are plenty of other benefits from exercising besides just weight loss.
