The people are not tossing aside the religious leadership. Western media does not show you there are more pro-government protesters. The economic problems of Iran are caused by the Western sanctions and efforts to overthrow their government, namely Britain and U.S., where ironically most Iranian ex-patriates live. The U.S. would love to control another sovereign country but the U.S. has interfered with their politics for 60 years, why should they be friendly? But, they are friendly. Most younger Iranians like American culture. Iran is not going to give up its religious leadership. The problem is that the U.S. is behind any such endeavor with willing accomplices inside Iran and the U.S. goal is to take over Iran's oil and to make it easier for Israel to invade and conquer Palestinians in Gaza, Lebanon, West Bank.
