Speaking as a women who recently retired from the field, computer science is horribly misogynistic. It was actually much better when I started, back in the 1980s, but has gotten progressively worse since the dudebros took over the field. That being said, there are still options for women. Working in academia is much better than the private sector. There are also IT businesses headed by and run by women, which are good places to work. The environment in silicon valley is toxic, but it's better in other geographic locations (I moved to Pittsburgh, which has a thriving IT scene that's much better than the west coast). Hopefully things will change in coming years. For now, listen to word of mouth as far as which areas and employers are better for women, and consider self-employment.
