She has been our family pony for 15 years but always acts like we are nothing more than a food source. When I hug her she looks back at me and goes back to eating. Is there a way to establish an emotional bond with her or is she too used to her laissez-faire lifestyle?

Horses and ponys don t understand human hugs.

Spend time with her - grooming, especially. When you find an itchy spot, spend a lot of time on it. Talk to her, the whole time.
