Hiroshi Tanahashi. The Ace of New Japan did turn a once dormant company into a $23 million thriving business once again. NJPW wouldn't be where it's at today without Tanahashi. Tanahashi appeals to young women but he's a great wrestler to boot. He can put younger wrestlers like Sanada and Tetsuya Naito over without diminishing his luster as a top tier superstar. He doesn't need to win just to be "over."
Shawn Michaels is also a great wrestler but he wasn't a huge draw during the mid-90's. I loved his matches against Mankind, Davey Boy Smith, Razor Ramon, and Marty Jannetty but he didn't turn around WWF's misfortunes, that was Stone Cold Steve Austin. It also hurts HBK's reputation that so many wrestlers badmouth him and the Kliq in shoot interviews and say his backstage politicking wound up hurting their chances of success, such as Bam Bam Bigelow, Adam Bomb, Shane Douglas.
I don't notice any of Tanahashi's peers complaining about his backstage behavior. If NJPW books him to lose to Sanada by tap-out, he'll do it without complaints. He doesn't have to be the IWGP World Champion to be over with the crowd. He's in his forties and he's knows it's time to pass the torch to Kazuchika Okada. Tanahashi is better than Shawn Michaels.
