Up until they got bought up by Whirlpool about 2000, I would have said Maytag was the best. And my experience with my pre-buyout Maytag would have borne that out. But not anymore.
As a handyman I have a lot of experience working on laundry equipment and GE, Whirlpool and Maytag are a neverending source of business for me. They fail in stupid ways, stupid little petty ways that shut down the entire washing machine. The sensors are fragile, the motors won't work without the sensors (even though there's nothing wrong with the motors themselves), and the lid latches fail. They just do. And they cost $50-100 to replace the lid latches, and you hope they won't fail again for a while.
At home I have an LG stacked pair that I have been using for about four years now and it's worked a treat so far. Every once in a while you have to clean accumulated gunk from the bottom of the washer door that may otherwise interfere with the seal, but that's all.
