Eggs have about 7 gr protein and cost about 15 cents a piece. A 3-egg omelet with a bit of cheese (more protein) runs you about 60 cents.
Legumes (beans) are an EXCELLENT source of protein, and run about 17 cents a cup. Add a ham-hock (more protein) and simmer slowly, then flavor with carrots, onions, maybe even some barley (4gr protein in a serving of barley for about 10 cents a cup) and you've got yourself some darned yummy bean soup for less than a buck a bowl.
Want something snackie? Peanut butter and celery- PB's got about 30 gr protein per tablespoon, costs about 5 cents per Tablespoon, goes great with celery, and makes you feel less hungry.
A whole chicken runs about $6.00, but should make you at least 4 meals- so that's meat protein for about $1.25 each meal. Make some of those legumes into baked beans and have a barbeque.
