Didn't they do away with them because they were always getting robbed by Robert Leroy Parker and, Harry Longabaugh better known to some folks as Butch Cassidy & Sundance Dance kid. Stop joking around Stanley, ok oK! On a serious note then.........
The old caboose was the office for a conductor, this guy kept tabs on schedules, etc, he looked out for trouble on the train by looking through the upstairs cupola or, bay window. If he saw Butch/Sundance and their gang he would ring a bell and the driver would step on the gas. ;-)
This guy was multi talented, he was also a brakeman and, at times when needed a flagman. Sometimes two brakemen were used, there was one in the caboose and, one forward. These guys would exit their stations to the tops of railcars and manually adjust the brakes.
When done they would meet near or, at the center of the train of cars. The flagman would flag all work done to the engineer and fireman. They had sleeping bunks and a stove for heating and cooking.
Technology was the reason for the demise of the Caboose darlin.;-)
