Always liked multi-story houses until I permanently injured my arch and ankle. Now I'm in a dangerous place to live and am not secure going up and down stairs. Unless I sell my old house (with extra high risers and thinner treads on the stairs than what would be up to code these days) I am not even safe carrying laundry to the basement, upstairs, etc. Sometimes I've fallen on those stairs. I am not even halfway to retirement or old age, so I didn't figure I'd want one of those boring 1 story houses. Now even an older ranch house sounds like perfection as multi-stories can really limits your life.
I hated, before all of this, vacuuming stairs, especially with pet hair on the carpet, or sweeping hardwood stairs--and even worse, hardwood stairs with a carpet runner makes it hard to clean the hardwood portion when it should be mopped (because then your carpet's wet). Vacuuming stairs is a PITA and can be heavy.
Hauling furniture, bigger mattresses, etc, is a pain.
In addition: having young children/toddlers/babies with any kind of stairs can be a danger--and I have seen falls, including in a former home I was renting, despite double security gates and a super careful eye/supervision.
