Not that much in the near term. You can't add more cars to the trains without lengthening the platforms. In many cases, like at the 145th Street Station on the 3 line where the platform can't accommodate a whole train already, lengthening the platforms is not an option.

In the long term, you can install the Positive Train Control equipment to reduce the time between trains and increase subway system's capacity. However, the PTC system works over radio, so MTA will have to install thousands of radio repeaters in the tunnels. If one repeater fails, the train movement in that section will have revert to the old traffic light system and cause delays.

You can have articulated subway cars like buses to fit more passengers, but it will take many years and billions of dollars to replace enough of the rolling stock to make a difference. You may also run into clearance issues between the subway car and the the trackside structures on the curves. You may have fewer seats in the cars to fit more passengers but the straphangers will, no doubt, complain.

Ultimately, you can build more subways, but that's very expensive and takes a lot of time. The first section of the Second Avenue Subway took nearly 10 years to build just three stations. (And nearly a century to plan.) The MTA current five-year plan includes money only for design and engineering of the second phase up to 125th Street. The actual utility relocation work is not scheduled to start until after 2022 and the trains will not run until at least 2029. Compare that to Moscow, which opens 2 to 4 new subway stations every year. (Not that I am a fan of their leader.)

Move to a smaller city. Problem solved.

the main reason for the overcrowding of subway is too much ridership,I want to offer my opinion on that, one possibility is that train only shuttle between the busy route and don't travel the entire route, second, the government can devote more money to build more metro line in order to ease the overcrowding,

we can optimize some means of public transportation and facility and service to attract rider ,such as building some bus only lane,

the implementation of these measures can help ease the overcrowding,

    More subways or fewer people.
