Is the confederate flag racist?
- Anonymous3 years agoFavorite Answer
Yes. Racism is inextricable from the flags history. It originated as a symbol of the Confederacy. While the US was founded on the idea that "all men are created equal", the Confederacy was founded on precisely the opposite idea: that white men are superior to black men. That racism is baked into the very origins of the flag. Furthermore, it's modern usage is also tied implicitly to racism. For almost a century after the war the flag was used mostly in setting related to the war: veterans organizations, memorials etc. Beginning in the 1940s, white Southerners resurrected the use of the flag and popularized it as a more widespread symbol of white Southern identity. At the time, African Americans were becoming more assertive about their rights. Racist whites adopted the flag as a way of asserting that the South would always be dominated by whites and that blacks would be, at best, second class citizens.

No. It is simply a flag for a (sic) country that doesn't exist anymore. People can find Racism in nearly Anything these days-is Chris Columbus a racist? Especially when the term didn't exist at the time? Is God a racist because Adam and Eve were both White?

No. It's a piece of cloth. Slavery wasn't the biggest issue of the Civil War. Slavery was wrong and on its way out long before Lincoln issued the proclamation.

Dot, angelharp has it right: which one? The stars and bars was a battle flag. Check your history. One flag of the CSA actually had a Christian cross on it. Racist? You be the judge. What the flag you probably are preferring is is history. That is it. Flags are not racist; people are. Peace, y'all.

Yes, and anti-American. Remember the Confederates fought against the United States of America. If you honor the Confederate flag, you dishonor the American flag!

no ....its just old history ...

the Stars & Stripes stood for slavery a lot longer than any Confederate flag..
... and last time I checked, it wasn't the Confederate flag that certain folks were refusing to honor at sporting events because they say it is a symbol of racial injustice....
so once again, it's all in the eye of the beholder....isn't it?

If it isn't why have Nazis in Germany started using it since the swastika is banned there?
