There are 3 trolley lines downtown.
The Blue Line goes from the border to America Plaza, which is across from the Santa Fe Depot, Downtown.
The line in front on the Convention Center is the Green Line. It DOES NOT go to the border, but heads north through Downtown and then east through Mission Valley, San Diego State, and terminates in east county at Santee.
The Orange Line goes from Downtown east to El Cajon.
Here is the trolley map:

As to where to park overnight?. That will cost money downtown. Most lots do not have overnight parking. The map indicates which stops have free parking. None are downtown.
The largest free lot is at the Old Town Transit Center. Parking there will require you to transfer from the Green Line to the Blue Line..
