When the air is not too humid. They probably will dry faster when it is hot and dry!

This can most certainly be done if you control certain factors.

First, do not put a lot of clothing dumped in the car as the clothes will need air circulation for them to dry. Run a line from one side of the car to the other and use hangers to hang clothing. Crack one window on each side of the car for cross ventilation and so the moist heat can escape.

Howsoever, if you have an outdoor area, you can dry your clothes there as well.

Is leaving clean washed clothes in the machine overnight a bad thing? ... My life would be so much easier if I could put a load on before bed then just hang it ... They usually start to smell after a whole day I find. ... at least i know i can wake up and know that by around 12/2pm my washing is dry

No. the clothes turn the air damp, and that turns car related material, like the roof headlining mouldy.
