You have to find a middle ground, especially if you are taking out student loans that you'll have to repay. You have to find a job that makes a living AND that you can stand to do every day. Some jobs with high salaries are extremely competitive, require that you live (rent) in a city with a high cost-of-living, or have extremely high stress (such as being an M.D.).
In some cases, the best choice might NOT even be "college," but a trade or owning your own business. I never thought I'd say this. Once a college degree almost guaranteed you a middle class lifestyle, but that's not true anymore. Some tradesmen made decent livings, don't have the loans to repay.
Even if you decide on a college degree, you can start by getting your core credits at a community college or even online, and then transfer to a more expensive college for your major or even for graduate school.
