Japanese Language Question: What does the "KEN," in Kendo and Kenjitsu mean?

Japanese sword fighting martial arts have the prefix of "KEN." I know what the "DO" and "JITSU" part of the word mean. Loosely translating to, "the practice of." Like in judo or jujitsu, ju- meaning soft/yielding, whereas "do" and "jitsu" being the practice of.

However, what does KEN mean in this context? Does it mean sword? Does it mean something else?

Update:

I thought "KEN" means fist???
