Probably not as rare as you would think. Atheists are often portrayed as liberals in the media, but me and many of my atheist friends are more conservative even though we don't like the evangelical part of the Party. As far as "agnostic", that is for people who don't fully understand what atheism is. Atheism is about finding no "good" reasons to "believe" the "claims" of theists that magical super Beings exist, not that any don't exist. Most atheists "suspect" that Gods/Goddesses don't exist, so when they attach "agnostic" to their label, they mean they can "imagine" being wrong. Few atheists understand why Gods are impossible and attach gnostic to their label. It doesn't matter what you know, it matters what you can "potentially" know and so far theists have given us zero potential for their claim.
