And then there was a woman named Barbara who had a spayed cat that was just like that. I went to visit one day and I was warned that she attacks. Oh, wonderful! Poor cat, she approached me, I grabbed her, held her, pet her, even kissed her on the head. Poor kitty. Sure taught her a lesson. She never had a chance to claw or bite me, but I sure "gave it to her."
The way around your problem, other than getting rid of your cat, first is to get a thorough vet check, neuter, then to make him greet people, while you control him so no one gets hurt. He may hate you for a while, but in the long run, he will, at least, leave your visitors alone.
