What did the Berlin Conference of 1885 achieve?
- Anonymous4 years agoFavorite Answer
It achieved an international understanding among the European colonial powers about how to divide up imperialist influence around the globe in order to avoid increased tensions or open war between them. Germany emerged as a powerful, unified nation-state in 1871, long after Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands, Britain, and France had already colonized much of the globe (certainly all the valuable regions). Germany fielded the single-most powerful army in Europe (probably the world at the time), so it demanded "a place in the sun" too--in other words, it wanted France and Britain to recognize its right to colonial territory in Africa and Asia. The Berlin Conference articulated this strategic realignment without the major powers having to resort to a general war between them.

It divided up Africa between the various world Empires. Germany was a new player on the international stage.
