Any name used between 1883 and 1920 will do, except Shirley. Another author wrote stories about Sherlock Holmes"s daughter Shirley.

I would choose Dorothy. It's a name given to babies within the time frame. It is not a "flower" name, though Holmes might not object to Rose (The Naval Treaty) or Violet (There are four women named Violet in the Canon). There is nothing wrong with Joan, Alice, Elizabeth, Mary, Louise, Cornelia or other names that were common then. I don't think Holmes would be fussy about any name, since he would consider the choice of names irrelevant. The mother would have freedom to choose.
