(a) What is the rms speed of a Helium atom in Helium gas at STP? (b) What

temperature would oxygen gas have if the rms speed of its atoms was the same as in part

(a)?

    STP temperature is 0 ºC = 273 K

    Vrms = √(3RT / M)

    (a) Vrms = √(3 * 8.314J/mol·K * 273K / 0.004kg/mol) = 1305 m/s

    (b) Oxygen gas is diatomic, 32 g/mol, so

    1305 m/s = √(3 * 8.314J/mol·K * T / 0.032kg/mol)

    T = 2185 K = 2458 K
