"The Road" is far and away the best book on that list. The others couldn't even begin to compare to it. That being said, to see the haunting beauty in it, you have to slog through a lot of bleakness and hopelessness, and many people just can't handle that. Not to mention that McCarthy is a craftsman and his books don't read like magazine articles. But it's extremely rewarding for those who give it a chance.

The only other book on your list I enjoyed was the Kesey novel, I thought it was all right.

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest is the best IMO.

The Kite Runner is a good book but pretty brutal.

The Color Purple is ok, very different than the others.

IMO the weakest of the four is The Road.

"IMO the weakest of the four is The Road." Clearly you know absolutely nothing about books if you would use the word "weak" to describe anything McCarthy has written.

  • Line 'em up. Read 'em all. Though The Road is a pretty harsh read - not for everyone.
