True. The modern era is a good example of this. Many new democracies fail rapidly. Africa is a good example, as is much of Asia. Many African and Asian countries are democracies on paper, and often have democratic constitutions and the like, but simply don't function as democracies in practice. Often, they are undermined by corruption, political infighting, a lack of respect for the democratic process, and so forth.

In many ways, the political culture of the countries in question comes into play a lot, with the respect each country has for democracy and democratic systems being a priority. For instance, in the USA, when Trump won the election, Hilary didn't go down to Washington DC in a tank to take power, and likewise, Trump did not have all liberals rounded up into prison camps and shot. The main reason for that is really, that it is simply not what happens in the USA, it's not what we do. In some countries it is what happens.

A good example of this is the Weimar republic in Germany, formed after world war one, which was taken over some years later by a certain Adolf Hitler. What Hitler basically did was become sufficiently popular that he took over the German parliament and passed laws making himself the dictator. Now technically speaking, this was unconstitutional, but the simple reality was that nobody cared- he was popular enough that nobody could oppose him, the checks and balances in the constitution were simply ignored, and he then filled the government up with his supporters to take control. In fact, he never actually removed Germany's democratic constitution, and when he died, the new leader of Germany became the "president", the original constitutional office. However, while he was in power, nobody actually paid the constitution any notice.

They might, because they were total shitholes for thousands of years before trying. I mean, why are African countries like that?

True. Democracies are very difficult to establish. Often times, new democracies do not take on the typical role of democracies we see in western Europe, and the two-party system of democracy in the US.

Here's a good source about why they fail:
