Is death really a portal to the other side or the priest told us this to not feel so scared/anxious about death?

Yes, there is a portal to the other side. However, most people are not prepared to make that transition.
Here's what Jesus said: Matt: 7:13-14: “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it."
However, Jesus shows us in Luke 12:5: "But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him."
Unless we are on good terms with God, there are very good reasons to be scared and anxious about death. The solution is to do whatever it takes to regain God's friendship.

Death is a natural consequence of having a life.
You can't see or do anything about what's on "the other side".
It's meaningless to worry about things you can't affect.
Priests and other clerics have no more idea about the other side than you do. So they tell you that it's either heaven or hell -- one if you do what they tell you, and the other if they don't. But really, they have no idea of what's "out there".
Maybe there is no "other side" Maybe there is.
Why worry about it?
And it's back to living life as best you can, whatever that means.
