Its an old rivalry from the beginning of the 20th century when there was rivalries between cities, St. Louis vs. Chicago, New York vs. Chicago, New York vs. Boston, Chicago vs. Detroit, and of course in NY, you had the inner city rivalry between the NY Giants and the Brooklyn Dodgers, who both played in the same league.

It's one of the, if not the, oldest: Cardinals-Cubs is one of the best rivalries in baseball, up there with Wankers-Roid Sox and Dodgers-Giants.
In fact, these are the only rivalries in MLB that have withstood the test of time. You can throw in the Mets-Wankers and Cubs-White Sox, but they pale in comparison.
