Pressure cooker regulator?

I m using a pressure cooker we ve had for a while and the pressure regulator doesn t sit right. It s all wobbly and doesn t look likes it s on. I read the online instructions (ours are gone) and it says that it s supposed to sit loosely. Is it?

Yes; it absolutely must sit loosely. That's how it works: it's a weight of precise size, sitting on top of an orifice of precise size. When there's too much pressure in the cooker, the steam pressure lifts the regulator a bit, letting the excess steam escape.

It's a very simple and reliable system; the wobble and hissing tells you that it's working.

Yes, that is the design. It must be wobbly or pressure would get too high and explode the pot.
