Use order of operations PEMDAS

according to PEMDAS

Multiplication comes first so,

5 + 1 × 10 = 5 + 10

Now addition

5 + 10 = 15

So it isn't 60

by using PEMDAS

P arenthesis

E xponent

M ultiplication

D ivision

A ddition

S ubtraction

5 + 1 x 10

Multipy first

5 + 1 x 10

= 5 + 10

then add

5 + 10

=15

therefore 5 + 1 x 10 is not equal to 60

but if the equation said (5 + 1) x 10 then it would be equal to 60.

First solve the equation inside the parenthesis

(5 + 1)*10

= 6*10

then multiply

6*10

=60

also it can be solved by distributing the 10 inside the parenthesis if the operation is multiplication

(5 + 1) x 10

= (5 x 10) + (1x10)

= 50 + 10

=60

but you cannot distribute 10 inside the parenthesis if it is addition and subtraction

(5 + 1) + 10 ≠ (5 + 1) x 10

Multiplication before addition.

5 + 1 x 10 = 5 + (1 x 10) = 5 + 10 = 15.

The answer is 15 not 60.
