How has sciene solved the problem of steam engines and their poluting?

Steam engines suffer from three main problems. They have low efficiency and therefore use more fuel than internal combustion engines. Fuel is burned in an uncontrolled way. The traditional fuel for steam engines is coal which is highly polluting.
Science has increased the efficiency of steam engines in power stations by switching from pistons to turbines. Biomass is used in preference to coal.
