There are hundreds of types of fuel cells. The most common we hear about uses a membrane, some platinum and hydrogen as a fuel. Less common but more commercially viable is a fuel cell that uses methane as a fuel. Efficiency for the hydrogen fuel cell that is used in electric cars brings the overall vehicle efficiency about equal to that of a diesel vehicle.

Stationary fuel cells that are intended to co-generate electricity and useful heat don't count the heat produced as a waste product as in vehicles. In this case the efficiency is higher. There are plenty of sources to explain how they work on the web including many on youtube.
