Why Do Republicans Blame Democrats for Legal Abortion?

In 1967, Republican Ronald Reagan, as Governor of California, signed what was then the most liberal abortion law in the country. In 1970, Republican Nelson Rockefeller, as Governor of New York, went even farther, signing a bill that allowed abortion for any reason or no reason during the first six months. The New York Legislature then passed a bill repealing the abortion law, but Nelson Rockefeller vetoed.

All of this occurred prior to Roe v. Wade, when the states had a choice in the matter, and Reagan and Rockefeller chose abortion.

Roe v. Wade, 410 U.S. 113 (1973), was a 7 to 2 decision, and 5 of the 7 Justices had been appointed by Republican presidents. Republicans, having constitutionalized the issue of abortion, have made it virtually impossible to change the law back to the way it was. The current formulation describing what a state may do to prohibit or restrict abortion (which is not much) was written by Sandra Day O'Connor, a Reagan appointee.

So, with Republicans having brought legal abortion to the United States, on what basis do they criticize the Democrats on the subject?

Update:

And let's not forget, that the old drunk, Betty Ford, the only First Lady to get a detox unit named after her, appeared on 60 Minutes, praising Roe v. Wade as a great decision.

Reagan and Rockefeller were Republicans from very sophisticated, urban backgrounds. Heartland America is the focus of the Republican constituency, and doesn't like abortion. Nowadays, the Republican party is supported by the pro-life forces. But Reagan and Rockefeller represented the Hollywood and Manhattan sophisticates. They weren't run-of-the-mill Republicans.
