Are professional athletes allowed to play in the Olympics?

If so, why?

    In general terms no, but it depends on the sport. When a sport has struggled to have enough athletes or interest globally the IOC has allowed professional athletes to fill teams. Basketball was like this for awhile. Many countries couldn't fill a team so they were allowed to play their professional athletes. Eventually the US got permission to do so and the Dream Team was born.

    Yes, the IOC authorized all sports to allow professionals. Most athletes in the Olympics are living in poverty. Even living with family and friends. They get small sponsorships. They are really just semipro.

    Yes because each countries wants their best athletes representing them. And also the people running the Olympics want the best athletes. It would not be as popular if you weren't seeing the top athletes. Also records would rarely get beaten without the top athletes. And setting records and changing history is one of the biggest things about the Olympics.

    each governing body of sport sets their own rules so some sports allow professionals and some do not.
