Vocaloid is a singing synthesizer program developed by Yamaha and produced and sold by Crypton Future Media. The program provides an artificial voice for user created songs One thing to note is that Vocaloid ONLY provides the voice, not the music. Artists use various other programs to make or record music. The program allows you to insert your own lyrics and control all vocal aspects including pitch and vibrato. There are multiple different Vocaloids and new versions of the program. The latest instalment is the Vocaloid 4 engine.

Vocaloid was first released in 2004, but wasn't very popular. The release of the Vocaloid 2 software (which Miku was the first Japanese model) proved much more successful. The first successful Miku song to be released was Miku Miku ni Shite Ageru. It still remains the most viewed original Vocaloid song on Nico Nico Douga. Not long after that, the song Melt was released and charted in the top 25 in Japan. Another extremely popular song called Senbonzakura has spawned a musical and has been covered by numerous artists in many different styles, including the popular violinist Lindsey Stirling.

Vocaloid is now extremely popular. Thousands of albums have been made by various artists, live concerts are held all over the world, and numerous video games have been produced. Miku remains the most popular Vocaloid to this day and probably always will be, but there are hundreds of others at this point (counting different versions of every character). That's about as much info as I can give you in a relatively short answer. I recommend checking out the Vocaloid wiki if you want more info.

As a bonus of how popular that song Senbonzakura is, below are some of the different covers by other artists, as well as a live version of the original song.

Man, I used to like them years ago.

Basically, they're computer-generated singers. Vocaloid, the company, creates them. And anyone can create the songs they sing. There's a software you buy and you create the music they sing. All the songs you hear on YouTube have been created by people. You can get multiple voices like Miku, Rin/Len. I know Luka (I think her name is?) also sings in English (though, not too well).

In a short summary; they are electronic voices that sing.
