Why can't banks tell you if the funds from a check deposit are actually, actually there in your account?

Or can they? Why is this even an issue in 2016? The numbers are there on the website but we basically have to guess if they're actually available for a transaction or an ACH, no?

Update:

The number of dollars is immediately displayed after I put a check into the bank. Perhaps my bank isn't capable of displaying a "pending" status?

    Whatever your "available balance" is what you can use.

    The easy way is to look at your account online and use only the money that is NOT pending
