And out come the keyboard warriors with combat records dating back to the assault on wikipedia...

The M4A1 is easily the best general-issue rifle that the US has in its arsenal right now. It is a complete upgrade over the M4, which is in turn a more versatile weapon than the M16A2 and A4. I don't know a single person who has carried both into combat and prefers the longer M16. That isn't to say that the M16 (especially the A2 variant) didn't pull its weight back in the day, but the overwhelming majority of combat situations we have been in over the last 20-30 years call for a more compact weapon that is almost as good at longer ranges.

The FN SCAR-H, more accurately referred to as the Mk17 (and variants) is not used in the same capacity as the M4. It was designed to replace the aged Mk14s being used in USSOCOM by designated marksmen, where it has excelled, though not many want it over an M4 for general usage. It was in turn beaten out by an HK design for future contracts that goes back to the M4/M16-style setup. That says pretty much everything you need to know about its effectiveness.

Define "effective." As far as U.S. weapons are concerned, most are M-16 variants. They're equally fine. The variations have to do with mission use.

If you factor in serviceability, Russian guns are better. You can wrap an AK in a towel and bury it for a year, dig it up and clean it out, and it'll fire like a champ. Try that with an M-16. You'll be disappointed.

Some people are complaining about the accuracy of AKs, and they have a point, but at close range accuracy is secondary to reliability.

When I was in the US Army the M16-A2 served me just fine.

M-16A2 or A4. Both are excellent rifles far superior to any AK or AKM POS.

None that fire the 5.56 NATO. That is a weak round developed from a small game round better for coyotes. The FN SCAR H is really good.
