Total possible number of combinations of ABCD?

e.g. AAAA, AAAB, AAAC, AAAD, AABA, AACA, AADA, DDDA, DDDB etc

And if I expanded this to all possible combinations of ABCDE, what would the total number be then?

Math isn't exactly my specialty. I built a virtual slot machine in a video game and want to know it's odds. Thanks heaps in advance for the help :)

    When you have n objects to choose from and you have k slots to fill, you can do it in n^k ways.

    For n=k=4, that is 4^4 = 256 possible combinations.

    For n=k=5, that is 5^5 = 3125 possible combinations.

    Read it wrong the first time.

    There are 4 options and 4 slots, so 4*4*4*4 is the answer for ACBD

    Then here are 5 option and 5 slots, so 5*5*5*5*5 is the answer for ABCDE
