Following are some examples of current court cases against the Catholic church which Broken Rites is observing in the Royal commission. Because of Yahoo Answers space limitations, this is not a complete list.
Bathurst court, New South Wales
A 51-year-old man, who has previously been through the courts charged with sexually assaulting children at Bathurst NSW, was arrested again in 2013 and was charged with four additional child-sex offences. The man, who was formerly associated with a church boarding school, was bailed to appear before a magistrate at Bathurst Local Court for preliminary proceedings. Detectives from Strike Force Belle in Bathurst are continuing their investigations.
Br Frank Brophy, De La Salle Brothers
Brother Francis David Brophy (also known by his religious name, "Brother Cormac"), now aged in his eighties, is scheduled for proceedings in the Queensland District Court, charged with child-sex offences, allegedly committed (decades ago) at BoysTown (at Beaudesert, south-west of Brisbane). Fr John Casey, northern NSW
Father John Patrick Casey, 67, of the Lismore diocese in northern New South Wales, is facing court on child-sex charges from the 1980s. See more from Broken Rites HERE.
Fr Richard Cattell, western Sydney
From 1964 to 1994, Father Richard John Cattell was a Catholic priest in parishes around Sydney and he became the Vicar-General, administering the Parramatta Diocese in Sydney's west. In 2016, Cattell (who is no longer a priest) is due to face charges in Sydney's Liverpool Local Court (case number 2016/00101011).
Marist Brother "Kostka" Chute
Marist Brother John William Chute (known in the Marists as "Brother Kostka") is scheduled to appear in Sydney's Burwood Local Court, charged with child-sex offences allegedly committed against boys in Lismore, northern NSW. See more from Broken Rites HERE.
Ex-priest Bob Claffey, western Victoria
A Catholic priest, Robert Claffey (now retired), who ministered in the 1970s and 1980s (in towns ranging from Ballarat to Warrnambool), is currently scheduled for court proceedings regarding incidents which allegedly occurred during those decades. See more from Broken Rites HERE.
Br Bernard Cooper, De La Salle Brothers
This Brother is scheduled for trial in the Queensland District Court, charged with sexual offences, allegedly committed in 1984-86 at BoysTown (at Beaudesert, south-west of Brisbane). See more from Broken Rites about BoysTown HERE.
Christian Brother John Coswello, Victoria
A Melbourne magistrate has committed Christian Brother John Francis Coswello (born in 1939) to stand trial in the Victorian County Court (scheduled for 2016), charged with child-sex abuse allegedly committed earlier in his career as a Christian Brother at St Vincent's Boys Home in South Melbourne. The police investigator is Sergeant Jonathan Russell, formerly of Taskforce Sano in the Victorian sex crime squad, who is now at the Dandenong Divisional Intelligence Unit, Victoria. Fr Frank De Dood, Salesian order
Father Frank De Dood (a member of the Catholic order of Salesian priests) is scheduled for court hearings in Melbourne, charged with offences against boys at a Salesian College in Melbourne between 1978 and 1983. See more from Broken Rites HERE.
Father John Joseph Farrell (sometimes referred to as "Father F"), New South Wales
During the 1980s and early 1990s, Father John Joseph Farrell (sometimes referred to as "Father F") ministered in parishes in northern New South Wales and western Sydney. Farrell is already in jail in custody for sexual crimes committed against children. He is also facing further charges after some more alleged victims have contacted the police. Fr Robert Flaherty, Sydney
This priest, now 73, has been sentenced to jail for indecent assaults committed against children in parishes in western Sydney in the 1970s and 1980s. He intends to appeal on some aspects of the case; therefore, he is currently on bail until after the appeal is heard. See more from Broken Rites HERE.
Br John Gaven
Brother John Francis Gaven, a member of the Catholic Church's Vincentian order, has been participating in proceedings in Sydney District Court. The outcome is not yet available.
Br Bill Houston, Victoria
In the 1960s, Christian Brother William Stuart Houston worked at St Augustine's orphanage, Geelong, Victoria. Later, he worked in Melbourne Catholic schools. He is currently awaiting criminal proceedings in the Melbourne County Court (case number CR-10-00893). See more from Broken Rites HERE.
Fr Glenn Humphreys, Vincentian Order
Father Glenn Michael Humphreys (born 1953), a member of the Australia-wide Catholic order of Vincentian Fathers, is still to face child sexual abuse charges in a court in New South Wales (click HERE) and, meanwhile, he has been jailed for offences committed in Western Australia (click HERE).
Christian Brother Terry Kingston
Brother Terrence Patrick Aquinas Kingston (born in the late 1930s), who had a long career as a Christian Brother in several Australian states, is scheduled for court in Queensland, charged with indecent treatment of several schoolboys in the 1970s. See more from Broken Rites HERE.
Christian Brother P.N. Lennox, in NSW
Former Christian Brother Peter Nicholas Joseph Lennox, who had a senior role in Catholic schools at Manly (in Sydney) and Goulburn (in southern New South Wales), has begun facing court proceedings in Sydney, charged with child-sex offences, allegedly committed in the 1970s in the Catholic school system. Fr Neru Leuea, Wagga Diocese, NSW
Father Neru Leuea (also known as Amitaunai Neru), of the Wagga diocese in New South Wales, is scheduled for court proceedings charged with aggravated sexual assault of a 10-year-old girl in 2002. To read more, click HERE.
Br Edward Mamo, Missionaries of the Sacred Heart
A former religious Brother in the MSC order, Edward Mamo, now 71, who was jailed in 2013 for offences committed against boys when he worked at Monivae College in Hamilton, Victoria, in the 1970s, has pleaded guilty in 2015 after more victims contacted "Broken Rites" and the Victoria Police sex-crimes squad. Brother Bernard Kevin McGrath
This former member of the St John of God Brothers has been extradited from New Zealand to Australia to face court regarding multiple child-assault charges, allegedly committed in church-run institutions in New South Wales between 1977 and 1986. To read more, click HERE.
Br Bill Marchant, Western Australia
Police allege that a Christian Brother, William Edwin Marchant, sexually abused a seven-year-old child who was visiting a Catholic school in Western Australia in the 1970s. Marchant, who is no longer a member of the Christian Brothers, made an initial appearance in Broome Magistrates Court in 2014. See more from Broken Rites HERE.
Father Roger ("Gabriel") Mount
This Catholic priest is facing criminal court proceedings in Victoria, regarding sexual abuse which allegedly occurred in 1968-74 while he worked (as "Brother Gabriel Mount") at a boys' home ("Churinga"), operated by the St John Brothers, in Greensborough, Melbourne. Mount later became a priest in Papua New Guinea, where he became known as Father Roger Mount. See more from Broken Rites HERE.
Br Dominic Obbens
Christian Brother William John Obbens (also known as Brother "Dominic" Obbens) is facing court proceedings in New South Wales, charged with child-sex abuse, allegedly committed while he was a teacher in the Catholic school system. To read more, click HERE.
Ex-Marist Brother Brett Anthony O'Connor
After working as a Marist Brother in Sydney in the late 1980s, Brett Anthony O'Connor eventually became the Director of Child Safety in the Queensland Government's Department of Education and Training. Now he is listed for court proceedings in Sydney on child-sex charges regarding his early career as a Marist Brother in Sydney. See more from Broken Rites HERE.
Fr David O'Hearn
Legal proceedings are scheduled in the New South Wales District Court in 2014 for Father David Anthony O'Hearn, of the Maitland-Newcastle Catholic diocese in New South Wales, who is charged with child-sex offences. See more from Broken Rites HERE.
Marist Brother "Dominic" O'Sullivan
Darcy John O'Sullivan, a retired Marist Brother (formerly known as "Brother Dominic"), has been committed for trial in New South Wales, charged with child-sex offences at Marist Brothers, Hamilton, Newcastle, in 1971 and 1972, while he was a Brother teaching at the school. He is also facing additional charges regarding a boy at Casino on the NSW north coast. See more from Broken Rites HERE.
