In the United States if a single paid spin of a slot machine results in payment of less than $1,200 it is treated like any other spin, even if it says you won a jackpot. If the spin pays more than that it will not be paid by the machine but by an attendant who pays you cash. Before receiving the cash you will have to supply identification and your Social Security number so the dollar amount can be reported to the Internal Revenue Service.

In other countries the procedures are different. For example, in Canada a large win is still paid by an attendant but you do not have to supply any identification and the win is not reported. However, if you are a United States citizen you are still responsible for taxes on the win.

There is no ceremony as in the movies. Confetti and balloons do not drop from the ceiling.

You merely get your money from the machine or if it is over a certain amount an attendant will come to verify and to give you the winnings.

If over another certain amount, they may be required to withhold some for taxes.

Most people would end up putting most of the money right back into the machine.
