    The Great Debate:

Henry Clay: 1) Admit California as a free state 2) organize SW territory 3) deny Texan boundaries into NM 4) compensate Texan loss by assuming debt 5) uphold slavery in WA DC 6) abolish slave TRADE in WA DC 7) adopt effective fugitive slave laws 8) Congress can't interfere in interstate slave trade

John C. Calhoun: As a southerner, Calhoun was concerned with protecting the equilibrium established in the Senate between the North and the South. He predicted secession if the North continued to marginalize the South as free states were admitted to the union, outnumbering the Southern vote in Congress

Daniel Webster: Webster also predicted that secession would bring war.

Ultimately, Congress passed all of Clay's points as the Compromise of 1850.
