Which sentence sounds more natural for you? 1. We met British actor Joseph Fiennes. 2. We met the British Joseph Fiennes.?

Please, if possible, indicate your variety of English. Thank you.

Update:

Sorry!

Number 2 is "We met the British ACTOR Joseph Fiennes".

Definitely #1 is the better of the two. The second sentence implies that there are other Joseph Fiennes besides the British one. That may well be true but I doubt that is what you meant to convey. It also implies that the there is only one British Joseph Fiennes, else the distinction is meaningless. You might also consider saying "We met Joseph Fiennes, the British Actor".

In the U.S. we would say "We met Joseph Fiennes, the British actor." We might even just say "We met Joseph Fiennes ... [short pause to see if the hearers know who he is, followed by a slight questioning intonation if they don't] ... the British actor? ... Shakespeare in Love?"

In the UK we would say 1. Sentence 2 does not make sense.
