Can somebody explain nintendo amiibo for me?
How do they work? What happens when you place it on the screen (or whatever you do)? How much are they? Are they worth bying and what is the point of them? And will they work for my regular 3ds xl.
Haha, my question may be silly but I really don't know anything about them. >_<

Amiibos have an NFC chip in the base that communicates with the reader built into the Wii U gamepad and New 3DS.
They do different stuff depending on the game. In Smash Bros. they give you special AI partners that level up when you use them and can be customized. In Hyrule Warriors, certain Zelda series characters unlock new items. In Super Mario Maker, they unlock character skins and items you can use when making levels.
Most Amiibos cost about $13 USD each and occasionally stores will have exclusive ones only available there. Whether they're worth it or not is up to you. Some of the stuff they unlock is kinda pointless, but a lot of people like to collect them to have figures of their favorite Nintendo characters.
The regular 3DS XL doesn't have an NFC reader built in. You need either a New 3DS (either model) or an NFC reader accessory like this one: http://www.gamestop.com/nintendo-3ds/accessories/3...

Not sure but my best guess is in super smash bros you can fight with AI while your amiibo is plugged in and the AI will copy your fighting style
And unlocked characters in animal crossing amiibo festival but who the f cares about that
If you have to ask "Are they worth buying" the answer is no
