Because New York City had a professional baseball franchise called the New York Giants when the football team was created in 1925, the football team was incorporated as the "New York National League Football Company, Inc." in 1929 and changed to "New York Football Giants, Inc." in 1937.

It's often called the New York Football Giants by the media, even though the baseball team relocated to San Francisco in 1958.
