Why the United States Postal Service website is. com instead of. gov?

I had to track a package on usps website and I was surprised that the government website is. com and not. gov like the rest of the government websites, why is this? the postal service is a government agency?

The United States Postal Service is actually an independent agency of the federal government and is therefore not limited by policy to use the ".gov" domain.

It ceased to be a cabinet-level department of the federal government in 1970 with the Postal Reorganization Act. That is when the old United States Post Office (USPO) became the USPS.

Nevertheless it is a self-funding organisation and rather semi-detached from government. .gov would be inappropriate.
