Cars: What can you tell me about Chevrolet Volt? Is it a hybrid?

What other cars are similar to it?

Do you have to go to a charging station?

The Volt is special because it uses a gasoline engine to charge the battery and that's about it. Toyota uses the engine and battery to work together, where as Honda's hybirds are pretty much gas engines assisted by batteries(so essentially it requires less gas to operate). Nissan Leaf is a pure electric vehicle that when you run out of power, you're out of power. The volt's engine will turn on when it's low and keep the battery charged.

Toyota has the most efficient and reliable set up, Chevy has the most practical. Everything else is in between is so-so assuming we're talking about $20-$30k economy hybrids/EVs

Yes, the Volt is a hybrid. If you want to run it off electricity, yes, you'll need to go wait at a charging station for a few hours (or get one at home). Or you could just run it on gas. A lot of new compact cars are at least optionally hybrids.

It is an electric car with very limited range from battery alone. There is an engine in the car that charges the battery to extend range so long as there is fuel for the engine. The engine never drive the wheels directly so in that sense it is an electric car but can be thought of as a hybrid because the energy that it use to propel it self is both from stored electricity in the battery pack and the energy in gasoline so in that sense it is a hybrid but not like in a prius where the engine actually drives the wheel to propel the car.

A volt is an electric vehicle, not a hybrid. It would be similar to a Nissan Leaf.

a Cevrolet Volt is an extended range electric.

it is an electric car that has a gasoline engine onboard to generate electricity.

the gas engine could be completely removed and the car would still move.

because of this, you can either plug the car in or fuel it up to keep up its range.

It is NOT a hybrid, it is an all electric car
