Why was Princess Eugenie of York thus named?

"Eugenie" is not a common female name.

Did Queen Elizabeth have to give her approval of Prince Andrew's and Sarah's choice of name for their daughter?

"Eugenie" has a royal pedigree -- it was the name of the Empress Eugenie of France and of Queen Victoria Eugenie of Spain, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria. Obviously, the Yorks just liked the name.

The Queen doesn't choose the names given to royal infants, but she does more or less "approve" of them and apparently has been known to give a thumb's down to a name she thinks is too trendy. I think it's probably fair to say that she prefers traditional names with some royal history.

No permission was needed, the name was used by royals before--there was an Empress Eugenie. There was also a Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg, agranddaughter of Queen Victoria.

Sarah had been researching a book about Queen Victoria and Osbourne House and she came across history of the royals names Eugenie and she liked the name.

Eugenie is a well established Royal name as other posts have pointed out.

They would have told her as a courtesy but no, they did not need the queen's approval, and the name is in the family, back a bit,a princess eugenie of battenberg was queen victoria's grand daughter.

She was named after Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg who married King Alfonso of Spain - she was the daughter of Princess Beatrice, Queen Victoria's youngest child.

Her other names are Victoria (self evident) and Helena, after Princess Helena, the third daughter of Queen Victoria.

The Queen is consulted out of courtesy, but doesn't need to approve.

I agree with Lili, Eugenie is a kennel club registered pedigree.

She is called Eugenie because it is a derivative of "eugenics" which relates to royal breeding in a vain attempt to produce a superior class of humans.

Andrew, and Sarah liked the name, which has been seen amongst Royals previously. The Queen did not have to give permission.

The Queen had to approve and the choice was the couples
