It's in part a stunt to promote Amazon Prime subscriptions, a paid option that gives frequent buyers free 2 day shipping and streaming media for about $100 a year. The free 30 day trial will work for Prime day which apparently will have more items on sale than black friday, it remains to see if they are just token discounts across the board or real bargains.
