First this history- the red flag with the blue saint Andrews cross and the stars is the confederate battle flag- the confederate national flag had two and a blue patch with a wreath of stars. (The current flag of Georgia should give you an idea) anyhow the bulk South tried to secede from the union - allowing slavery in new territories was one of the issues.

The union battle cry was union forever until 1863- when the emancipation proclamation took effect and slavery was declared illegal in any part of the south that was not yet under Union control. Opponents of the flag will point out the issue of slavery and the fact guys in the KKK do fly the flag.

Supporters of the flag on the other hand see it as an issue of Southern pride- and argue that they see it as nothing more than a symbol of the south. They will point out that the KKK will also fly the US flag as well

They will use the line the civil war was about state's rights by which they mean is the right to leave the union though they don't like one of the issues.

It's substantially the same thing as if a bunch of Germans started flying the Nazi Flag and claiming they were doing so "because it's their heritage"....

The Confederacy LOST the Civil War, that flag belongs nowhere except perhaps in a museum...it's a "badge of the ignorance & racism" of anyone who displays it outside a Museum setting....

The use as a racist flag, plus I don't believe you don't know the history of the rebel flag, no one is that ignorant.

I am actually from South Africa, not everyone knows everything that happened in the US... and it seems like there's more to just it being a symbol of slavery, it is also considered just a flag representing the South and some people find pride in that flag for other reasons,,,

It speaks of a time when black Americans were thoroughly suppressed by white Americans, as opposed to today when they are only somewhat suppressed by white Americans.
