He prefers a refractor (as I do) so a good choice for $500 or less would be the Celestron Omni XLT 102. It retails for around $450-500. Try Telescopes dot com (The Orion Telescope Center).

I always preferred refractors and catadioptrics over reflectors, especially for planetary observations. It's a good crisp image. Most people will advise a Dobsonian and warn you against used telescopes, but in the case of refractors if you could ever get an old Tinsley they are magnificent optics- as long as they are not damaged. Most commercial optics these days are not so great.

PS: If he's a fan of "The Office" you'll see this telescope carried around by Dwight Schrute with a $150 price tag- Season 7, Episode 18 "Garage Sale."

If you're crafty, make him a packet of Professor Copperfield's miracle legumes to give with that telescope and he'll love it!

Buying a telescope is a very personal decision, so you've really got to get your husband involved in the choices.

Giving wifely permission for a purchase might be the best approach.
