Basically, when a team signs a player, they have a contract. In this case, let's say a player gets signed to a 5 year contract. After 5 years, the player has completed the contract and becomes a free agent. As a free agent, this player can choose to sign with the same team, or sign with another team that is interested in him. That's the basics of free agency

Hmmm I don't know the exact NBA rules on free agency. But free agent is a player without a team. Usually a player is drafted to being traded when he is in a team. But when he's a free agent, he can play for any team that he desires. He can choose to continue playing in the NBA if a team signs him or stop playing in the NBA. Some players never continued to play in the NBA and pick a team in Europe. This is what happened to Allen Iverson. He spent sometime in Europe and now he's back in the US. Oh bTW Yao Ming is not playing in China. He's retired. Now Mr Yao is a politician in China.
